R U OK?

R U OK?

Standing beside my deadly treadily bike “Flo“on a cycle path I hear the call out “R U OK?” from a passing cyclists. Three words provide a lifeline of reassurance, an insurance from humanity that I am not alone.

It takes a second to reach out in this way to connect with strangers and friends to check in to see where they’re at.  Let go of the hesitation, self consciousness as it will make a difference to someone’s day.  The cost is nothing other than to listen and we are all bestowed with two ears for this purpose.   Let go of the expectation that you will be the solution to a problem, your presence is enough, its the sense of being connected.   Stretch beyond social media to reach out in a three dimension connection – you will be rewarded.  The response could be a thumbs up with a fine or a thumbs down with a sigh.Continue Reading

Gliding calmly like a swan – paddling frantically like a duck

Gliding calmly like a swan while paddling frantically like a duck

There are times when it appears that a person is calmly gliding like a swan when internally they are frantically paddling underwater like a duck,  particularly in December when demands are high in work and family settings.  How does one maintain this façade?  Is it worth the effort and fatigue?   Is it realistic?  Do we have a choice as to how we move?  These questions arose while I was attempting to let my nose come to my knee in  a forward bend in yoga.

Well….. well?     Well!

How are you?

Come stai?

An innocuous question that leads to a pondering .   This question encourages us to review what we define as wellness, where our wellness sits, what is valued and consider what can be done to improve.Continue Reading

Oooooh that’s a flesh wound ! Perception and Bowen therapy

Cindys battle for a ball

An injury, sprain, strain or break with pain, immobility and tears is more than just a flesh wound.   It challenges a person in more than the physical dimension extending into their capacity to work/ play, eat, sleep and socialise.

Perception of an injury is unique to the individual and as a Bowen therapist I value hearing the client’s viewpoint as it orients my work.Continue Reading

The invisible heroes

A guiding hand, a water bottle, a cheering call with a high 5 follow through and the garden hose squirt these actions by the community are the gold medal that they deserve in supporting athletes. Solo events are a misnomer. It is the support of peers, coaches, friends, family and strangers that enable competitors to achieve their goals.

When preparing for an event, I find questioning those that had swum, cycled and run before me, offered gems of wisdom. Access to sporting events is limited by cost of events, equipment, coaching, culture and internal/ external motivation.Continue Reading

Study days

Ta da, done, finito … the final exam for my studies completed. AHH … the relief. Contact with friends resumed and the house rediscovered. Study days become a haze as life goes on.

‘Tis the time when students hover over books, scrawl copious notes armed with highlighter and study cards. Heightened intensity fuelled by caffeine and minimal sleep as stress levels arc towards exam timetables. Survival and flourishing under pressure. How is this possible?Continue Reading

To Bee

To Bee

A beautiful costume jewellery bee pendant sits around my neck as a reminder of how to be. Like the bee this way of living is finite and fruitful.

According to aerodynamics the bumble bee is not built to fly. But nobody told the bumble bee so she frantically flaps her wings believing she can fly and is airborne with positive self belief. Bees, like us, live in an interconnected community where each individual contributes to the survival and success of the group. Buzzing words of constructive encouragement can give flight to individuals dreams – this positive example can inspire a community.Continue Reading

Jin Shin Jyutsu was introduced to me by Jennifer Taylor who’s passion and enthusiasm for the healing art spread to me like wildfire. I am so grateful Jen shared JSJ, as it is a tremendous gift that has empowered me and all I touch. Fortunately I have been able to attend education sessions in Australia and Singapore and will continue to study until my fingers and toes drop off. Continue Reading

Topping up

Topping up “To keep an oil lamp burning we have to keep putting oil in it” Mother Teresa. Putting energy into ourselves, refilling the tank is crucial to our wellbeing.   Fighting for causes, chasing danger, feeding the masses and healing the sick all takes its toll on a finite energy reserve.
