Bowen therapy is a gentle manual technique that helps muscles relax and return to their correct length. It is non-manipulative and non-invasive holistic treatment that works on soft tissue.
The therapist applies a series of gentle rolling moves over the body’s muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves. This releases dysfunctional muscle, skeletal or nerve states, toxins and old patterning that restricts the body’s ability to heal.
Bowen therapy influences the autonomic nervous system that is responsible for the flight or fight.
What does a treatment involve?
A Bowen treatment takes approximately 45 minutes with the work being performed on the skin or through light clothing. Three to four treatments at weekly intervals are often sufficient to achieve lasting pain relief. The treatment initiates a cascade of beneficial changes which unfold over the following days.
Aftercare advice emphasises the importance of movement (particularly walking), drinking water and contacting the therapist if there is adverse response. Reactions may include tiredness, emotional changes, stiffness, headaches, flu like symptoms or dream activity. These are not negative responses as they demonstrate that the body is undergoing change process to restore balance.
Bowen therapy will enhance not interfere with medical treatment. However, other manipulative therapies can undermine the ongoing effectiveness of Bowen work. Waiting a week before other body treatment is recommended.
